This information can then be used to develop a market understanding. Decisions can be made based on relevant market dynamics, demand and scope. An organization can make informed decisions based on the data in its database. This is the 21st century’s new fuel. Database management systems are applications that work with the administration department to store and process multiple datasets simultaneously. The business needs will dictate whether the database is centralized or decentralized.

History of Database

In 1950, the first computer of this level was created. The 1950 computer used Binary Language and was very basic. It was primarily used to perform calculations, establish communications and assist scientists in Aviation Physics. The computer was not intended for businesses at that time. Globalization led to an increase in demand for automated mundane and redundant tasks.

Financial Accounting’s ledger system is the first to be replaced. In 1961, the computer sector saw the first major advances. The advent of fast, reliable and accurate computers was a turning point in the history of humanity. There was a need for a programming language that businesses could use. Computer scientists have created a Common Business Oriented Language (COBOL) to program computers to do specific business-oriented tasks. These were built on Navigational Databases. These databases do not allow for manual storage of files.

Evolution of Database

In 1991, the west was relying on computer systems for recreation purposes. Scientists came up with NoSQL to address the need. NoSQL is overcoming the limitation that computers can only be used for business purposes. These systems can handle unstructured data like Art, Photographs, Music, etc. It can be linked to an object, and it can also be stored and managed effectively. These systems were created using Java Relational Database Technology. You can link the data in the system with various keys, including Primary Key, Secondary Key and Foreign Key. The object-oriented Database Management System revolutionized Database technology and laid the foundation for future innovations.

Types Of Database Systems

  • Single File or Flat File Database
  • Multi-File Database or Relational Database

Data is stored in a single file database. Each line of data was separated using commas, delimiters and so on. Each line holds at least one record. This system is simple and consists of sheets.

Multi-file databases are relational databases with multiple files linked to each other with key pages. These databases offer more functionality and many linkages that allow data to be read, updated, deleted, created, or updated. You can further classify a relational database system into four types, such as

  • Hierarchical Data – This system stores data in a tree-like arrangement, with each data being linked. The relationships between files are stored predefined, between ‘parent nodes’ and ‘child nodes’. To access the data required, the user must pass the hierarchy.
  • Network Database – This system has multiple levels of hierarchies as well as key connections. The system follows many relationships, allowing a child to have multiple parents. Multiple datasets can be stored in different places and accessed via different Key Locations.
  • Object-Oriented Database Objects are used to map information in object-oriented databases. Different types of relationships can be used to access the objects. An object-oriented programming language is used to develop the database.
  • NoSQL (or Non-Relational Databases– NoSQL) is an alternative to relational databases. These databases are used primarily for storing, retrieving, and processing semi-structured or unstructured data. This Database stores and analyzes key components such as graphs and images.

Choosing an apt Database

Database Systems can be complex, so it is important to ask serious questions when choosing the right system.

  • Types of data to be used
  • Data structure and data model
  • Where are the data stored?
  • How do you manage it?
  • What are you going to use it for?
  • What consistency will your data show?
  • Which query mechanism will it be?

A spreadsheet is the best option if you have a small need and only require limited data updates and filtering. A relational database is better if you have large data requirements and need multiple edits.
